Be sure to back up anything and everything.
One app I recommend for use when you do a full transfer is Wine (http://www.winehq.org/download/) to run any windows apps you may choose to reinstall.
Also, remember that you WILL lose ALL of your non-backed up data. THIS IS NOT A THING TO JUST CASUALLY DO.
This will make permanent changes to your system.

Thankyou for that.
It wont happen overnight, but I have decided Vista is going,
its just a matter of time before I do it.

A good idea I think to take your time.
1. It seems you can have the Wubi Install.
A good way to try out Ubuntu
Windows Partition only
2. And also the dual boot system see here
Using something like this
So you end up with a dual partition but with GRUB on boot up.
3. You could have only Ubuntu/Linux on your hard disk, and Vista in the bin.
4. Or you could run Ubuntu on an external drive like sjdvda
Pendrive Linux
There are probably other options.
I would have thought useful to continue to have the option to switch between both Windows/Ubuntu.

I have thought about that pendrive idea,
It would only cost me £12, thats nothing for an brand new OS,
also looking into dual boot system
I am taking my time, I will not do anything rash.

Good
Yes the next step is not an obvious one.
The great thing about loading Wubi Ubuntu is it's comparative simplicity.
But if one likes Ubuntu it is then not clear what one can do next.

Have you tried installing Wubi Ubuntu, that will allow you to keep your XP and play around with Ubuntu at the same time.
You can uninstall WUBI when you want, and XP will be back to normal.
Or have you already tried that ?
Many thanks

Thanks for the Wubi Ubuntu link
No problem.
It is worth remembering that this application takes about 5 gigabytes of the Hard Disk.
So it is worth checking if the space is available.
Once loaded when you start your computer you should be prompted
Whether you wish to run in Windows or Ubuntu.
Some load Ubuntu on to memory sticks, but I know little about that.
Might be an option if you find you like Ubuntu.
Many thanks
