FD confuses Foxmarks?
kmc —Thu, 08/28/2008 - 20:28
I use Foxmarks which is an online bookmark synchronizer. Anytime I made a change to FD, e.g., options in preferences, refresh all, etc., Foxmarks thinks there's a modification in bookmarks which will prompt a synchronization afterward. So, what did FD do to bookmarks? I'm using:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1a2pre) Gecko Minefield/3.1a2pre - Build ID: 20080828155133
# Fast Dial 2.1
# Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer 2.1.0.12
Thanks

I remain a little unclear about this problem.
Please could you Foxmarks specialists clarify this for me.
I must be missing something.
Is it not possible to simply not synchronise the Fast Dial Folder element in both of your two machines.
I would have thought that such an action would have the effect of no longer causing any confusion for Foxmarks
Please advise...

You need to set the add-on up to use a profile that's stored on the server (by default there is "no profile" selected, but it still works fine that way). On the foxmarks website, you need to exclude the Fast Dial folder. That folder can only be excluded from the website, you can't choose what to sync from the add-on itself.
I'm not entirely sure this will solve all the issues between the 2 add-ons yet. I'm still in testing.

Foxmarks will either want to make the contents of that folder be the same on all PCs using the same account, or it will delete it from PCs where the selected sync profile has that folder unchecked.
For example, when I unchecked "Fast Dial" from the sync profile I use at work, Foxmarks didn't ignore the folder. It deleted it.
I see the sensibility in your question, but the feature you're asking about isn't currently available in Foxmarks. The Bookmarks Toolbar folder gets standardized across computers, too.
Possible short-term fix:
Changing the "Name" variable in utils.js results in Fast Dial using a different folder of bookmarks. For example, after changing the variable to "Fast Dialer" and opening Firefox, my start page was then named "Fast Dialer" and it was looking for a "Fast Dialer" folder of bookmarks. This does not appear to have any other effects on the extension, but I could be wrong.
However, this would have to be repeated with every extension update, wouldn't it? That makes it a rather annoying solution in the long term.
BUT, this does allow me to have different Fast Dial pages on different PCs. I could even set each profile to not sync the Fast Dial bookmarks of the other profile, too.

Thanks for your most helpful post

Shame

Wow !
This is most helpful to know.
Have you considered approaching the FM developers to modify this behaviour.
It would be most helpful in this case.

Interesting
Maybe it would be useful if one had the option to modify the name of Fast Dial folder in Bookmarks from within Fast Dial
I have asked telega to look at this thread, maybe he will come up with a workaround.

Mmmm...
This seems somewhat of a limitation.
But good to know about.
Seems a lot of bother...
It would be preferable to find a more simple solution.

Interested to know how you get on.

Further information: One can set individual bookmarks to be excluded from a profile. However, you can only do this to folders and bookmarks at the "top level" of the bookmark list. Anything that's within a folder is beyond your control.
Dangit.

Thanks again, dagwud
This is also very useful to know.
It is very helpful to understand the limitations of Foxmarks to try and find a workaround to this problem.
Re: FD confuses Foxmarks?
Submitted by dagwud on Mon, 09/15/2008 - 14:29The following may also be a work-around to this issue. Use at your own risk for reasons to be explained below.
I stumbled across this behavior. If you set a folder to be excluded from a Foxmarks sync profile and then recreate the folder, Foxmarks creates two folders on their server, both with the same name but different contents. And it seems to view them as separate folders, without cross-pollination of bookmarks.
What I do not yet know is if having two folders with the same name becomes problematic. I'll play with it for a few days and report. I would hope that it doesn't cause problems or corrupt files, but you never know. Repeated syncing may reveal something that I'm not seeing immediately.

Wow dagwud this seems quite ingenious !
Congratulations
Long term however, don't you think, it would be preferable to find a simpler solution
Have you I wonder approached the developers at Foxmarks to modify the behaviour of Foxmarks just a little to help resolve this problem.
In the meantime, maybe some sort of modification of Fast Dial may also help resolve this issue.

I use Firefox with Fast Dial and Foxmarks, and had the same problem. i played around with it today and i fixed the problem by creating 3 profiles for foxmarks, which exclude the Fast Dial Folders (note: one folder "Fast Dial" per PC!) so one profile per PC which exclude the other PC's two Fast Dial folders....pretty confusing eh? :-P
anyways it works for me now, but it would be great if one could tell fast dial into which directory to put the data ;-)
