Firefox not retaining bookmarks on reboot

ssansil —Thu, 10/09/2014 - 14:14

Hello, I am having a very hard time.
Got a new work computer, so I immediately installed fast dial.

Downloaded a theme from the site (EarthfromSpace.zip).
Please see here

After a few days, I decided to change the theme to a plain image.
Spent days requesting logos and setting up my fastdial page. it was perfect.
When I close firefox and turn it back on, everything is okay.

But when I turn off the computer or restart it, I lose my image and bookmark folders.
It always goes back to EarthfromSpace with no bookmarks.
I spend the day reposing every image and link and the same issue occurs when the computer is restarted. This has happened a dozen times.
I uninstalled fast dial and reinstalled it, Earth from Space is still listed in the memory and is used as the default theme, still not saving my info.
I uninstalled firefox and reinstalled it then installing fast dial, same issue. this theme is haunting my firefox and wont go away, inhibiting me from customizing or even using fast dial the way I need it.
Any advice?

I guess you could try the following

In Firefox
Click
Help/Troubleshooting Information
Click on -Show Folder-

That takes you to the current Profile

Once in the Profile go to
Extensions
then go to
fastdial@telega.phpnet.us

then go:
Chrome/Skin/Themes

Open themes and try to delete the offending Theme

This is not standard procedure, but it may remove for you the offending theme.

The truth is that there would appear to be something very wrong with your setup that bookmarks are getting deleted and that you cannot remove this theme.
All that you do is really for curiosity> I cannot see any step that we take will resolve the fundamental problem

I guess in the final analysis, the problem lies in the relationship between Firefox and Windows and relates to a problem in Bookmarks.

Perhaps it could be suggested to remove all signs of Firefox from your computer and then install an earlier Version of Firefox and see if the problem re-asserts itself.

It is however somewhat strange that this particular behaviour does not seem better documented on the net

But the fact that telega has pointed to a problem in Firefox nightlies of this sort should I think encourage you to work with a an earlier known Version of Firefox if only to see if it resolves your problems

I think it could be believed that your problem is not being caused by Fast Dial or by the theme in question

Or if it is the nature of this error is not yet documented

I believe the themes located inside the "fastdial@telega.phpnet.us" folder are only the themes that are shipped with the Fast Dial extension.

Themes which a user creates or imports himself are located in:

FIrefox Profile folder -> fastdial -> themes

If a theme has been modified, but not saved, it will have a prefix tilde/squiggly ~
Once a user modified theme is saved (Via the "Rename" option) it will be located in a folder named "userXXXXXXXX" with a random generated number.
Also, the currently set theme will be in a separate folder, "current".

Whoops
Thanks for the heads up on this

Yep
It would seem there is in this Themes Folder in Fastdial there is a Folder for the theme.zip
In this case earthfromspace.zip

Plus in the Firefox Profile folder -> fastdial -themes

there is Current folder which contains earth2.jpg plus style.css

Testing on my setup deleting the zip has no immediate effect on the view, deleting the contents of the current folder seems to remove the Theme from view

@telega
I suppose he has some nightly version of Firefox. I had heard that some such versions sometimes clean profile, thus deleting Fast Dial settings/bookmarks.

I have one question and I suppose it is for telega

If booknarks are saved in places.sqlite when are the bookmarks saved
Are the saved when Firefox is closed ?

If that is the case how can then a reboot of the computer effect the folder places.sqlite ?

Or is places.sqlite only saved to during close and reboot ?

@chiaroscuro:
Im trying to upload a screenshot to show you what I see, when I open my friefox profile, and click on...
Extensions
then go to
fastdial@telega.phpnet.us

then go:
Chrome/Skin/Themes

my offending theme is not listed. only metallic, round shadow, and transparent.

But when I open preferences in fastdial, then appearances then theme, I have 4 active themes, one if which is my offending theme.

So under FIrefox Profile folder -> fastdial -> themes, I located the corrupt theme, deleted it. made it disappear from the current file. none of which had a ~. Restarted FireFox and the corrupt file was deleted. Restarted the computer, the file appeared back on my fire fox, in my theme folder and in my current folder as well.
