Just a quick note that FD doesn't seem to work with DownloadHelper. I did a fresh install of Firefox 16.0.2 and noticed that after adding all my extensions that FD was just showing up as a blank page. After disabling DownloadHelper, it worked fine.

Tnanks for your feedback
Could you confirm that the extension you are referring to is this one
Did you test this in a new Profile with only these two extensions ?
Do you also have TabMixPlus running ?
I ask this question because we had a similar complex issue with another download Extension
Please see here
Please also see this thread on the TabMixPlus forum about this issue.

First I would examine your New Tab settings in TMPlus (if you are running)
I would check the DH forums
There seems to be quite alot about DH grabbing the new tab page

I think dwhelper is the string for the filter
