Suggestion : Remember state (last opened folder)

if a web page is opened through a link that resides in a subfolder, say root>movies>cinema and under cinema folder there are i.e. 3 more links. now, whenever we press the FD button again and a new FD page/tab apprears, not the root folder, but the cinema folder should be displayed, because that was the last displayed folder.
there should be a checkbox named something like "remember last folder position" in preferences.
would be useful to me :)

Submitted by telega on Mon, 01/19/2009 - 09:25You can quickly access folders by right-clicking on Fast Dial toolbar button and choosing the folder from the context menu. Or you can create bookmarks linking directly to a folder by dragging folder tab to a Personal Bookmarks toolbar.

Submitted by msegmx on Tue, 01/20/2009 - 06:46yes, I know.
but you have to remember where the link was you clicked 5 minutes ago. even in a well organized folder structure, it would be much more convenient to just click on the FD button.
BTW it's hard to find the right subfolder again and again as the number of folders and links increase with time.
would it be hard to code ? I 'm a developer using java, but have never coded a Firefox addon. AFAIK those are coded in javascript, right ? It should be possible to code it easily using some kind of 'global' variable.
but you know better of course.

I sort of understand the logic or what you are saying.
Personally in your situation , as the Tabs are automatically given the name of the Folder, I would simply click on the named tab of the Group Folder that I was in to look at the Folder cells again.
It will not have gone away however long I stay in the link.
This seems to work fine for me
Many thanks

what if there are many subfolders ? folder under folder 2, 3 or 4 levels ?
an example :
first I open Firefox, my homepage (google) opens.
second I open a new tab (by Ctrl + T), now FD appears with links and group folders. now I click on "movies" and then "cinema". amongst other links under "cinema" folder there's the imdb link. I click it, so I have 2 tabs, the first one is Google, the second shows imdb.com.
Now I press Ctrl + T again and a third tab opens with FD. but to get to the cinema folder, I have to navigate over the movies folder again (that makes 2 clicks + remembering the path).
damn I have had enough of this cinema stuff, I want to get back to the root, well then one is trapped in that folder for ever
yes, but there are back tabs, right ? in earlier versions there was a FD tab that navigated directly back to the root.
and once again, there should be a "turn it off" checkbox in preferences :)
(by default, it could be turned off, so users who'd like it have to turn it on)

Wow!
I am beginning to understand the nature of your request a little better now.

What has happened to the Cinema Tab ?
Please try altering your settings to open in "New Tab"
This is the simple tab structure I have when doing what your doing.
So it is very easy to find the current Folder.
I would also recommend that you consider opening your Firefox with Fast Dial, by changing your setting in Firefox to
When Firefox opens show a blank Page.
And then to have a Google Icon prominent in your root.
This sort of set up you may find is really quite convenient.:-)
Many thanks

it is imdb.com now.
Actually I know these options in preferences, "open in new tab" / "open in background tab".
Set "Open in" option in Preferences to "new tab" or "background tab" as chiaroscuro recommends and your Fast Dial page will stay open.
well my wish is not to make it stay open.
the way FD works right now, it's like when the user presses the FD button on the toolbar, the user starts to work from scratch again. If it would show the last opened folder instead, FD would just help the user with what he's working on.
you know in Windows Explorer, there is an option "remember each folder's view settings" :
now imagine there would be no such option, the users would have to press the "view" button and adjust some folder views over and over again. some folders are best viewed in icon view (pictures), and some should be a list with appropriate columns. the lack of such an option would be disturbing for most users I guess, but on the other hand, there are users which don't like this option and simply turn it off.
I like that 'holding the state' thing, it reminds me of what I was doing, so I don't have to concentrate on it again.
and, the option to let FD open as a tab is not an option, it's much like someone is waiting there and observing me (a little paranoid I know :) )
I want to close it and when I need it it should be there (helping me, not vice versa).
