Re: Any Way to Simply Omit Logos and Screenshots?
Submitted by upChuck on Wed, 11/12/2008 - 13:50No. If I understand corectly 'Organize Bookmarks' is not a landing page interface containing all one's links clickable directly from that page, and rearrangeable by drag-clicking. Organize Bookmarks is variation upon standard Firefox bookmarks navigation: scroll-menus and searching through folders. Yes?

Is that actually intended to be an answer?
If so, then:
Thought needs space -- space which is not eaten up by useless and pointless space-grabbers.

macleod.mac has made the following generous suggestion
>I think the only way to counter that would be to have images with just plain text in them.
I can make some for you happily if you simply tell me the text you want in each one. The only problem is this makes it more impractical to change any links.<
Perhaps you could take up his offer and see how you get on.

While I appreciate the offer -
Again:
It's pointless. Useless blank space which has nothing within it, OR useless blank space with redundant title text floating in it -- is still useless blank space.

Submitted by upChuck on Wed, 11/12/2008 - 21:12Autohome is not the same concept. For one thing, it's not drag and drop navigation.
It's baffling that you guys are so utterly resistant to adding a simple yet vast enhancement.
All you need is a toggle in the prefs to keep or collapse logo space, coupled with an expansion from your present 10x10 maximum layout parameter to the 10x500 (or so) the page would then be able to contain.
You've got a fixed concept that we all want a page cluttered with logos or tiny screen captures...and you're refusing to let that concept morph, only defending and yet again defending the status quo.
I'm glad you find your cartoon amusing, though I'm not getting from this conversation that anybody here is all too awesome at all, only people who oh so firmly believe they are -- which is the worst kind of boor. Seems like a lot of legends_in_their_own_minds. It's a telling cartoon, really.
Whatever... I give up.
Re: Any Way to Simply Omit Logos and Screenshots?
Submitted by gumanov on Wed, 11/12/2008 - 21:22upChuck, it seems you have misinterpreted Mafia_Penguin's comment
everything below the dotted line is his signature, and appears in all his posts, it was not part of his comment towards you.
as for the problem you are having.. fast dial can display only the titles if you use a transparent image as the custom logo, but then there is much space left everywhere. Fast Dial was designed to be visual, hence its description in the addons dialog: "Visual Bookmarking"
if you wanted to use 10 x 500 cells, your firefox will not handle this. it is way too much code to fit into a blank tab. it will hog the system.
now, i have not tested this, but maybe messing with the cell size could work. theoretically, if cell height is very small, the space will no longer be there..
EDIT: also one more thing.. we are defensive for a reason. we want fast dial to be what it is, and not slowly turn into something totally different
Re: Any Way to Simply Omit Logos and Screenshots?
Submitted by upChuck on Wed, 11/12/2008 - 21:42mafi0z, I appreciate the open dialogue.
And Mafia_Penguin, you might want to take another look at that smarmy cartoon signature of yours and what it implies, whether consciously or unconsciously. Lotta cartoons out there to choose from; you might want to wonder why you chose that specific one, and why you find it funny or even only mildly amusing, if even. No diff to me, but heads up - waliking around even slightly like your cartoon friend is not likely to get you laid. Or employed.
No offense intended, sincerely, and with all due respect
Anyway -
I greatly appreciate that you are at least willing to experiment with cell size. That's encouraging. And if not 10x500, then 10x100; whatever works. I am speaking somewhat from ignorance here, but it seems to me a page made of html text would be a lot less memory intensive than a page made of graphics, right?
Re: Any Way to Simply Omit Logos and Screenshots?
Submitted by gumanov on Wed, 11/12/2008 - 21:50tell you want, ill mess around with the settings as much as i can either today or tomorrow, and see what i can come up with..
i think chiaroscuro tested the cell quantity a while back, and i believe he said firefox crashes upon reaching 10x10
which is 100 cells..
as for text or graphics, i think text would obviously be less memory intensive, but not by too much.. this is because javascript is used to make the cells, and calculate all the necessary dimensions, etc.. alot of javascript = hogs memory.
(now remember, i am no expert, i could be wrong about the javascript being intensive. just my thoughts from my experience using fast dial. best way to go is to ask telega - the developer.)
