Bookmarks out of control & multiplying
bluedog Fri, 09/05/2008 - 21:07
I'm using Fast Dial v2.1 in FF3 and am having a problem taming my bookmarks.
When I first started using FD2.1, I had a number of sites saved on the front page from when I was using the previous version. After looking at some tutorials on the FD site, I worked out what to do and wanted to change the structure/layout of my FD home page I created some home pages based on topics (eg Firefox, Tech Support, Favourites, etc) with the intention of adding bookmarks to those folders (via the FF Bookmarks menu) so that when I click on say,' Firefox' on my FD home page, all my firefox bookmarks are revealed in thumbnails on the next page.
I'm having a couple of problems, but the main one is that the bookmarks that were originally on my FD home page keep multiplying every time I restart FF and it doesn't seem to matter what I do when I organise them, I can't seem to get them to either remain deleted or stay where I move them to. This doesn't happen with any other bookmarks I have saved since using FD2.1 - just the ones I had from the previous version.
When I go into 'Organise Bookmarks', in my Fast Dial Folder in FF Bookmarks, I have 4 sub-folders which are repeated in sequence below each other 35 times (x4 = 140) folders. I can delete them now (again!) but next time I restart FF they will be back. As they insist on showing up in the same order, any new folders I create are saved after them so they never show up on my FD home page.
I have spent hours looking through the FD forum and FAQ's and have tried many of the suggestions I've seen like clearing the cache, etc but nothing so far has resulted in a permanent solution.
Any help with this frustrating problem would be greatly appreciated.

Submitted by bluedog on Fri, 09/12/2008 - 22:00Hey Telega - Good news!! I upgraded to FD2.9 and.... so far, so good. Had to do a bit of tweaking and re-arranging bookmarks but rebooted afterwards and no more multiple bookmarks and changes made stayed this time. I noticed that any Folders created from a particular time don't have the same settings (page format, colours, etc) as my earlier setup but I'm sure I can fix that easily.
One thing I did wonder about though. I noticed when I was re-organising my bookmarks in Firefox, that there are 2 folders -
One is Recently Bookmarked and none of the bookmarks that were in there before I started re-organising were 'Recent Bookmarks' - they were quite old and nothing I had bookmarked recently were in there. Is there a way to clear this folder, without deleting the bookmarks so it can start fresh?
The other is Most Visited in Bookmarks Toolbar. Before I re-organised bookmarks just now, the bookmarks in that folder included some, if not all, of those rogue bookmarks which had been multiplying.
Not sure if any of the above would have had a bearing on the problems but just though I'd mention it anyway.
For now though - FD2.9 has fixed the problem. Thank you so much to everyone who has helped fix the bookmark issue - I hope this latest upgrade works for everyone else who has been having problems too.

Great feedback.
Very interesting
Thanks
Keep us posted......
BTW
One can never be sure...
But I think it's unlikely that Tab Mix Plus is the source of your problems...

Submitted by bluedog on Sat, 09/13/2008 - 00:30Just a quick update. Still going good - no more multiplying bookmarks. Haven't tried to re-organise FD Home Page in v2.9 yet so will let you know if any issues then (will start a new forum topic on FD2.9).
While I was fixing things up though, I thought about something else that might have contributed to the problems I was having. I use the FF extension Permanent Tab (constantly) and usually have FD marked with Permanent Tab so it is always one of the tabs which opens when I start or restart FF. I probably had FD marked as a permanent tab throughout the upgrades and re-organising multiplying bookmarks saga. Just thought I'd mention this too.

Good luck
Thanks for the Feedback
FF extension Permanent Tab
I don't know if you are referring to Permatabs.
But there have been a number of reports recently of conflicts between Permatabs and recent Versions of Fast Dial.
The reports were that Permatabs just stopped working.
But nothing more serious.

Submitted by gumanov on Sat, 09/13/2008 - 01:13what are "permanent" tabs?
u say u :
"usually have FD marked with Permanent Tab so it is always one of the tabs which opens when I start or restart FF"
u can have FD open on firefox startup very easily - choose "show blank page"

Submitted by bluedog on Sat, 09/13/2008 - 01:29Yes, sorry - Permatabs.
Not sure if you know, but there was a lot of angst among users of this extension about it's incompatibility with FF3 when the final version of FF3 was released. As I rely heavily on that extension, I wouldn't upgrade to FF3 till I knew Permatabs was compatible. (There is more on this in the Permatab forum on Mozillazine). Anyway, there were a few unofficial Permatab upgrades released and the latest one was posted on FF Addons within the last week or so. I've just been waiting to see if there are any bugs reported before I upgrade. The version I'm using is 1.8.4 - it might be interesting to know which version others with conflict problems are using.
Re: Bookmarks out of control & multiplying
Submitted by bluedog on Sat, 09/13/2008 - 01:41Mafi0z - Permatabs is awesome! A couple of examples of what I use it for -
If I come across a site that looks interesting while I'm doing something else, I'll right click and select Permanent Tab from the context menu. That stops me from getting distracted from what I should be doing till I'm ready to, or have time to look at it. I can restart FF, reboot my computer and when FF re-opens, any tabs I have marked 'Permanent Tab' come up straight away. The thing I like about Permanent Tabbing is that it keeps things in my face whenever FF is open.
I know I can make FD my home page, but using Permatabs is not so permanent. If for any reason I don't want FD to open when I restart FF, I can just right click and deselect Permanent Tab rather than having to go into Internet Options and change my home page. I might do this once FD is more stable though and I have worked out how to get it looking like I would like for my home page.
