Source code modification in Simple Mail

Hello everybody,
i am currently working in an assignment to modify the source code of simple mail.
My target is to change the ability of the extension to send the mails automatically and
create something like a "delay tolerant" mode.
My first goal is to find the code where simple mail sends the messages and modify the exception code to keep a timer to retry sending the mail.
The problem is that i am a still beginner in open source stuff and i cannot really see where to start from.
Can someone help me in finding the sending code??
