“Slow Dial” more like! (I have 3 complaints)
Nearly There Fri, 08/08/2008 - 17:04
I do love the idea of Fast Dial, in theory — but is it supposed to be so slow?
For me, it takes about 6 seconds for Fast Dial to appear the first time I open a blank tab. After that, it takes about 3 seconds. (This seems to be regardless of how many, or few, sites I have set up on it.)
But isn’t the point of Fast Dial to save you time by giving you quick access to all your favourite sites? Waiting for it to load seems to kinda defeat the object.
Other issues I have…
I found it extremely annoying how the default keyboard shortcut is Alt+numpad. Every time I tried typing any text (like, an apostrophe, using Alt+0146 — or a dash, using Alt+0151), Fast Dial would send me to another website. It took me ages to figure out what was going on. This must be stopped!
Another big problem I have is that you can’t simply add bookmarks to Fast Dial (either by dragging them, or by selecting them from some kind of list), so adding sites is very cumbersome as you have to manually type all the URLs in yourself. IF you right click a bookmark, there is an option that says "add to Fast Dial", but this doesn’t seem to do anything.
These issues aside, it seems like a good add-on. I just really wish it would load a bit faster.

I just have one, rather stupid question. How do I get rid of the blue refresh circle on all of the thumbnails in Fast Dial 2.1? I dont need them, since I'm using static images and there's nothing to refresh.
Thanks.

How do I get rid of the blue refresh circle on all of the thumbnails in Fast Dial 2.1?
The blue refresh circle is shown in FD 2.x when auto-refresh timeout is specified in thumbnail properties.
So it looks like you will need to de-select this option by going to Thumbnail Properties.....
Good Luck...

i mean having like 15-20 thumbnails is not too bad, but going all the way to 50 is crazy unless u've got a gaming pc or somettin
i use 4 x 3 = 12 thumbnails, and it loads fine on my pc
2.4GHz dual core processor, 2gb RAM

It does not do what intends to.

Sure....
But only 16 were mentioned.....
There seem to be a number of users experiencing problems.
It would be so much more interesting if those that were experiencing problems could describe their set up in detail, there might be some common element.
I mean it is quite possible that there is another Extension conflict somewhere, like the one you found with Firebug.
At the moment it is most unclear if the problem lies in the Users set up or with an Extension conflict or with limitations of Fast Dial 2.x itself.
It would be really good to get to the bottom of this !

Interesting...
What Extensions are your running ?
Have you tried either
Disabling your other Firefox Extensions or
Running your Fast Dial Set up in a New Profile ?
Would be good to understand what is happening.....

Yep.

Blue refresh circle is shown in FD 2.x when auto-refresh timeout is specified in thumbnail properties.

Well, I don’t know if I can blame Fast Dial or not.
I disabled every Add-on I have except Fast Dial and it loaded OK. There was a 2 second wait after pressing Ctrl-T, then it instantly appeared, without any of the waiting for thumbnails to appear that I’d had before.
I then turned all my Add-ons back on, one by one, and eventually I had turned them all back on and Fast Dial was just as fast.
Conclusion: after turning all my Add-ons off, then back on, Fast Dial now loads fairly quickly. It always takes about 2 seconds (give or take quarter of a second), and that is regardless of how many other Add-Ons I have present.
I wonder though if the problem will come back after a restart? I hope not. I don’t have time to restart tonight though.
My specs:
Athlon 1GHz, 640Mb RAM, WinXP SP2, ATI All In Wonder 128 graphics card.
I currently have 16 thumnails in my fastdial, although I noticed the problem of thumnails taking ages to display even with only a small number.
I’m definitely leaving Fast Dial enabled for now. If I only have to wait 2 seconds every time, that is acceptable. I’ll have to see what happens after a restart though.

Was yours also the post starting with the words:
Well, I’ve been using Fast Dial for a couple of weeks now, and I have decided it’s just too slow, so I’m going to have to uninstall it.
If it was you, you can always go back to an earlier post and Edit it.
You could then add your name somewhere, might be helpful.

Good.
Congratulations!
This is truly great news as it strongly suggests you have discovered an Extension Conflict.
And not only that but it suggests that Fast Dial is fine.

Did you restart Firefox each and every time that you re-enabled an Extension ?
This is absolutely necessary.
The extension Restart Firefox is useful for this
What we are looking for is just the one Extension that is causing this problem. So when you enable each extension one by one, there will hopefully be one extension that will suddenly cause your slow behaviour in Fast Dial.
It is that Extension that we are looking for.
Once you have discovered which extension it is, you should find that with just that Extension disabled, your Fast Dial should run just fine.
--------------------------
If you are patient you should be able to discover which extension this is.
Top suspect is Firebug so I would try enabling that first if you are running it.
-------------------
Did you I wonder do as Mafi0z suggested and change your Version of Firebug ?
i had the slowness problem you are describing a while back..
The issue was a different extension, called "Firebug".
If you do have it, upgrade to Firebug v1.1 beta - it fixes the issue.

As of August 25 New Version of Firebug Version 1.2

This Firefox Extension
Mr Tech's Toolkit
will enable you to make a quick list of all your extensions very easily. It would be interesting to know what Extensions you are running.
Click on the blue "i" toolbar button
If you can post that list others experiencing slowness may recognise an extension that they are running.
Or it may enable others to try to reproduce your problems.
The list will look something like this:
This list shows all enabled extensions before showing disabled extensions, so it is important to enable the extensions you are using first.

If you can find the time to work through your extensions one by one and manage to find the Extension that is causing this slowness then this will be an extremely valuable discovery.
If you do discover the culprit, please do not delete the Extension immediately as it might prove important to know exactly which Build Version it is.

Dont give up yet, we are Nearly There :-)
