“Slow Dial” more like! (I have 3 complaints)

I do love the idea of Fast Dial, in theory — but is it supposed to be so slow?
For me, it takes about 6 seconds for Fast Dial to appear the first time I open a blank tab. After that, it takes about 3 seconds. (This seems to be regardless of how many, or few, sites I have set up on it.)
But isn’t the point of Fast Dial to save you time by giving you quick access to all your favourite sites? Waiting for it to load seems to kinda defeat the object.
Other issues I have…
I found it extremely annoying how the default keyboard shortcut is Alt+numpad. Every time I tried typing any text (like, an apostrophe, using Alt+0146 — or a dash, using Alt+0151), Fast Dial would send me to another website. It took me ages to figure out what was going on. This must be stopped!
Another big problem I have is that you can’t simply add bookmarks to Fast Dial (either by dragging them, or by selecting them from some kind of list), so adding sites is very cumbersome as you have to manually type all the URLs in yourself. IF you right click a bookmark, there is an option that says "add to Fast Dial", but this doesn’t seem to do anything.
These issues aside, it seems like a good add-on. I just really wish it would load a bit faster.

Submitted by gumanov on Fri, 08/08/2008 - 17:31Hmm..
i had the slowness problem you are describing a while back..
The issue was a different extension, called "Firebug".
If you do have it, upgrade to Firebug v1.1 beta - it fixes the issue.
If not, please post a list of all your extensions so we can have a look.
shortcuts - you can change the keyboard shortcuts for fast dial..
which version are you using?
bookmarks - the right click item "Add to Fast Dial" should add the selected site to the next available cell in Fast Dial - if you dont have an empty cell, it should be automatically created (quantity setting is increased)
this right-click menu item is also present on websites, so u can right-click on a webpage, and add it to fast dial very quickly..
(ONLY FD 1.x)
in FD2, adding to FD is done by bookmarking..
just bookmark a site into the "Fast Dial" folder, and it adds to your FD page..

Submitted by Nearly There on Sat, 08/09/2008 - 12:52Where can I download a new version from? Both the links above don’t have any “install” button or download links.
The only place I can find a version of Fast Dial is here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5721
And that is version 1.90.

Submitted by Nearly There on Sun, 08/10/2008 - 18:54Ah… sorry. I see it now. (Not very easy to spot the link!)
This build is far better. It’s much quicker to load and it doesn’t prevent me from typing in the Address Bar (or doing anything at all) while it’s loading. (Like the older build did!)
For some reason, there is now no option at all to add bookmarks to Fast Dial when you right click on a bookmark. Presumably, this feature has been removed as it wasn’t working?

In version 2.1 all Fast Dial bookmarks are stored in "Fast Dial" subfolder of the Firefox bookmarks menu folder. So you can move existing bookmarks to Fast Dial by copy/pasting them in Firefox Bookmark Manager.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 08/25/2008 - 07:53Well, I’ve been using Fast Dial for a couple of weeks now, and I have decided it’s just too slow, so I’m going to have to uninstall it.
Version 2.1 is quicker, but it’s still extremely frustrating waiting for it to load up the first time. Before anything appears at all, it takes about 4 seconds. Then, each of my 16 thumbnails takes about a third of a second each to load up. It doesn’t prevent me from typing in the address bar while it’s loading, but it does prevent me from clicking on any of my regular bookmarks. So if I create a new tab in order to open a bookmark in it, I just have to sit there waiting for all the thumbnails to appear before I can click on my bookmark, which is very annoying.
So even though I love the idea of Fast Dial, I’m going to have to say goodbye to it. It really is too slow on my PC.

Submitted by telega on Mon, 08/25/2008 - 12:37I see 2 possible causes of the slowness:
1) There's a conflict with some other extension. To make sure, please install FD on a clean Firefox profile (run "firefox.exe -p").
2) If the above doesn't help, you can try Speed Dial extension, it has functionality similar to FD, maybe it'll work for you.

I presume your second possible cause for slowness was the processor ?
