Dials periodic refreshing - replace image only after new one is loaded

DoTheEvolution —Tue, 10/29/2013 - 05:34

So you can choose which dials you want to refresh every X minutes
Its nice and all, but would be much nicer IMO if the progression would not be

  • times up
  • delete current picture
  • lets look up the new one
  • download the new one
  • paste it in the dial

but instead the picture would be replaced only after the new refresh is fully loaded

  • times up
  • lets look up the new one while old one is still in place
  • download the new one
  • replace the old one for new one seamlessly

cheers

While checking the code I have found a bug - auto-refreshed thumbnails weren't removed from cache, so got refreshed only once Fast Dial page is opened again. You can get version 4.12 from here: http://userlogos.org/extensions/fastdial
Regarding your question - this behavior is hard to implement.

Well, I think, no. Because Fast Dial is loading not images, but pages (image is loaded only when logo is specified).
Currently, when a page loading fails, Fast Dial just takes picture of browser's "Can' load page" message. As I understand, you don't like to see this image in place of a dial. But I think some users would like to see this message to be aware that some network error occurred.

Actually what I dont like seeing are empty dials and loading animations instead of the content.
The error screenshot is no problem, be there if thats what the refresh see, but switching between previous and current screenshot to be instant and without the loading... thats what I would love

Please try updated version 4.12. It doesn't delete images being refreshed and shows "wait" cursor on them instead.
