Off line message
chiaroscuro Sat, 06/12/2010 - 20:23
I keep getting an annoying Off Line message.
Had it yesterday
Had it again today
Message reads
Site off-line
UserLogos.org is down.
Transferring to a different server...
Thank you for your patience
Impossible to get on the site..
This should not be happening...
Is anyone else getting this ??
May just be blips as the system settles down.
But would be most interested to hear if anyone else is getting this..

Try clearing your firefox cache, or rebooting your computer.

Yes, you mentioned that before...
userlogos.org still gives this off-line message.
All I am doing is entering a bookmark.
I am unclear how this could be related to my cache or how a computer restart could resolve.
If I use the URL to your site that was used before the change of the domain name to userlogos.org I can access the site fine.
If you personally are able to access the site using userlogos.org, then it suggests that this question may be related to the location of the user, and that possibly the correct IP address of the site in some locations has still not been processed.
You could, if you were interested, I suppose try logging in from different proxy locations in the world, and see if you could reproduce this problem for yourself.
Yesterday the site was off line for two hours or so.
And it looks like being so again for as long as that again today, if not longer
If others are experiencing this same problem, I would be most interested to discover common elements.
My impression is that this is the old hosting company's message, and that for some reason or another the userlogos.org domain name is still being routed in some locations to the IP address of the old site.

Submitted by chiaroscuro on Sat, 06/12/2010 - 22:01Saw this:
If you are moving your site to a new IP address or ISP this procedure will help minimize the downtime and confusion during DNS propagation.
1. Set up the DNS on your new host to point to your existing (old host) site first. This is an important first step.
2. Now change the TLD (top level domain) information at your domain registrar to point to this new site DNS. Your old site should still show by either by IP or domain name. This step results in "propagation" which commonly takes 72 hours to update servers world-wide, so do not proceed with step 3 for about four days.
3. Copy your existing site to your new site and validate that all files have transferred and the links work.
4. After allowing 4 days for the DNS to be fully propagated, point your new DNS to your new site. Make sure that your old site mailboxes have been emptied before you change any DNS info at this time. Once this DNS change occurs you cannot get to your old mail.
5. If everything has been validated you should now also point the old DNS to your new site. This is a safety issue in case there is a lingering propagation error.
6. Search Engine listings or bookmarked pages should transfer to your new site with a 301 redirect.
Does the above bear any relation to the procedure that you have been undertaking ?
userlogos.org is still off line from my geographical location

Do you not think it might be useful (if you have not done so already) to ask the previous hosting company to remove this off-line message and maybe have a re-direct message, and if anyone is directed in error to the old UL site, that they simply redirect the caller to the new site ?
If there is any doubt you could even give them your own site address rather than the new domain name, to temporarily overcome any possible lingering problems related to the domain name being directed incorrectly..
This would avoid a closed loop situation
Also it would allow us by observing the nature of the message as well as which site one ended up on, to get a much clearer idea of what was actually happening.
Re: Off line message
Submitted by gumanov on Sun, 06/13/2010 - 14:12It it not a message from the hosting company..That is the message I put up using the "Off-line" mode in the admin end of this site.
I put the old UL off-line so that it will not be used while a transfer occurs, that way no data loss occurs during the transfer period.
Also, I would like to avoid redirecting users to that other link, because they might think that is the new UL address..
A regular users will either see one of two things when they type in "userlogos.org" into their browser:
1) The "Transferring to a different server..." off-line mode message
2) The regular UL site, like you see here.
This all depends on whether or not their ISP has updated their DNS records.
So basically the regular users will not be confused..
just maybe a little impatient while waiting for the transfer to show up on their end.
Enough time has passed for most ISP to update their records, so at this point I am sure that the majority are seeing the new site.
And as far as why you were brought back and forth between the two, I am still confused about. That should not happen O.o

But surely it is the wrong message ?
Would it not be better to have a message saying that:
You have been directed incorrectly to this site.
Please wait while DNS records update - hopefully within a day or two at the most, you should stop seeing this message, and will be directed to the new and working Userlogos.org...
And as far as why you were brought back and forth between the two, I am still confused about. That should not happen O.o
Do you mean why I should keep getting chucked back to the message.
Maybe as I am further from the server it takes different routes to get there.
But yes, it did n't work to start with on either address
userlogos.org
and
www.userlogos.org
then worked on both
then stopped working on both
the worked on both
then stopped working on both.
then worked again......
I guess possibly as I am further from the server than you that I may take different routes to get there inviting errors.
Who knows...
I am sort of expecting it to happen again tonight.
Enough time has passed for most ISP to update their records, so at this point I am sure that the majority are seeing the new site.
In that description that I posted 72 hours/4 days was quoted as expected delay

Yes, everything is fine over here on UserLogos. However, some of the tech that the internet is based on--the thing that lets you type in http://userlogos.org, rather than 174.132.104.2--is slow-ish. Would you please open up a command prompt (press Win+R at the same time and then type cmd into the box) and put this in:
ipconfig /flushdns
@chiaroscuro: may you please do the same?

It might be, it might not...
But if it does reappear it should also disappear.
These problems it seems are to be expected for up to four days or so after this sort of move....
Good luck your end !
