dear god i finally got it working. I realized i had been deleting the wrong folders and whatever i f***ed up in the previous version must've been still there. I ended up uninstalling firefox, deleting the folder Mozilla Firefox in Program Files and then reinstalling it and it works.

your "New profile loading 2.14 into 3.0.3" somehow sparked the realization i might not be deleting the right thing

For what it's worth, I had this same issue. My icons were not refreshing correctly - they just had the spinning dots and the icon for the page would never load.

if you are stuck, give it a shot.
