Suggestion: Support multiple FastDial profiles
Anonymous (not verified) Mon, 01/05/2009 - 03:12
Hey guys,
I'd like to ask for a feature that gives me the option to stores several FD-bookmarks, but - depending on the profile I'd like to use - only let a specific amount to be shown.
An example:
Home-profile (sync'ed via Foxmarks):
Bookmark A
Bookmark B
Bookmark C
Bookmark D
FastDial shows Bookmark A-D
Work-profile (sync'ed via Foxmarks, too):
Bookmark A
Bookmark D
FastDial shows Bookmark A and D, but _not_ B and C - is this possible?
If required, I could store A/D and B/C in different folders, let's say "FastDial-1" and "FastDial-2"..
Best regards,
Martin.. :)

Find the following lines:
var FdInfo = {
URI: "chrome://fastdial/content/fastdial.html",
NAME: "Fast Dial",
ID: "fastdial",
change the NAME to something different. I did this for my work account:
var FdInfo = {
URI: "chrome://fastdial/content/fastdial.html",
NAME: "Fast Dial (work)",
ID: "fastdial",
This will make fastdial use a different folder on the computer you change this file. Then you can have your own set of bookmarks. I know its not exactly like you wanted, but I think its the best you can do.

Still, I'd like to see the suggested functionality being implemented - so, is there any chance that this will happen?
I'd be glad if the dev(s) could answer this.. ;)

This is a complex question.
And maybe one which you could research yourself.
First of all Foxmarks synchronises automatically Bookmarks Folders of the same name.
And this cannot be disabled
Previously the Fast Dial folder in Bookmarks was always called Fast Dial
And well as Foxmarks did not have the possibility of switching off synchronisation between two files of the same name, then unhappy Foxmarks users were writing in that their Home Bookmarks were appearing at work on their Fast Dial Folder.
It was at this point that Fast Dial brought in the option to change the "home" Folder in Bookmarks. And well in Bookmarks one can also rename the Folder.
So Fast Dial could now function with any name in Bookmarks for the Fast Dial Folder.
So it then became possible to have one Fast Dial file in Bookmarks called Fast in one machine and the other one Dial in the other machine and they would not synchronise automatically any more.
So then Foxmmarks users could then run two Fast Dials happily without any problems.
---
Now you have come along with another scenario.
I wonder if this may be possible.
Maybe you could try it out.
This may not work, but you could try playing around
In one machine call the Fast Dial Folder "Home"
Name it as Home with right click option.
Call one of the folders in "Home" by the name "Work"
In the other computer call the Fast Dial Folder "Work"
So what one is trying to do is then to synchronise a sub folder with a folder because they have the same name.
What I am trying to think of is finding a way to trick Foxmarks into synchronising a sub-folder with a folder.
You could try that.
But I seem to remember that Foxmarks will not synchronise sub-folders with Folders of the same name.
If Foxmarks does not do that, then maybe you could ask the guys at Foxmarks to maybe enable that, or maybe they will come up with another suggestion.
Fast Dial is already pretty flexible now, and the question that you are referring to is really a synchronisation question not a Fast Dial question.
Please let me know how you get on
---
Of course there is a much simpler solution and that is to have two Firefox profiles at home
Have one profile called Work with the Fast Dial Folder in Bookmarks Menu with the same name as the work Folder.
Then this folder will automatically update if you make changes at work.
Have another profile called home, which has a different Folder name from your work Folder.
This Profile would then be completely independent and unsynchronised with you work Folder.
Many thanks

I’d also like to apologize for being dumb enough to oversight the easiest solution (IMHO, two Firefox-profiles aren’t the easiest way, because I’d have to select the right one each time I launch the browser) — using two different folders (in combination with Foxmarks’ ability to kinda “hide” folders via different sync-profiles)!
I’m going to try this way and I’ll post the result as soon as I get enough time for checking out.. ;)

Submitted by Eagle (not verified) on Mon, 01/19/2009 - 07:08Alright, took me some time to do it (and especially to get this website not running into Drupal’s error-page(s)), mainly because of too much work..
Anyway, it works absolutely great - thanks a lot for the hint and all the instructions! :)
Still, support for custom tab-titles (currently, the Fast Dial's root-folder name is shown as the tab's title) and most importantly support for sub-folders would be nice.. ;)
Note: with "sub-folders", I mean this behavior:
[Fast Dial-root]
- Bookmark A
- Bookmark B
+ [Home sub-folder]
- Bookmark C
+ [Home sub-folder]
- Bookmark D
At home, I would have bookmark A, B & C while A, B & D would show up at work.. :)
