Connection Failed

Hello, and apologies if it's me, but...
Yesterday, Simple Mail worked and I really liked it. But all day so far, I just get 'Connection Failed.' My email still works with Thunderbird. Both have the same settings. It seems like the Simple Mail motor has died, but I don't see anyone else yelping, so...

Submitted by jefboyardee on Thu, 09/26/2013 - 11:04Thanks yet again, but I somehow just fixed it with my old sidekick, Advanced PC Tweaker. It must have cleared some cache garbage, who knows.
A new question: I don't want to turn Avast AV off to check mail, so I'm trying to enter Simple Mail as an exclusion. In its Global Exclusions, I've entered both 'chrome://simplemail/content/main/main.xul' and just 'chrome://simplemail/,' but that doesn't help. Is there another trick I need to learn?

the exclusion should be on Firefox not Simplemail ....
You should allow Firefox to use TCP/IP on port 993 and 465

You got me there, getting in over my head.
Avast wants either a file path or a URL address in its entry box. Further, I really don't know if Global Exceptions is the place I want to be, just looked appropriate.
In Avast prefs

It has IMAP port 143, to which I added 993.
And SMTP ports 25 and 587, to which I added 465.
I also tried it with just 993 and 465.
That got the 'connection failed' to not show up, but also sends Simple Mail's loading bar into a permanent loop. I'm probably guessing wrong again, but apparently getting closer.
I think I fixed it! Never
Submitted by jefboyardee on Fri, 09/27/2013 - 01:24I think I fixed it! Never mind that I don't know what I did, other than retract the Avast settings I just mentioned and checkmarked something that looked appropriate. I believe I can leave you alone now... thanks again.
SOLUTION:
Submitted by jefboyardee on Sat, 09/28/2013 - 20:28SOLUTION:
It wasn't Simple Mail, but I thought that it wasn't. It wasn't me, but I thought that it was. The delivery problem is Avast AV. I googled avast firefox 'simple mail' and found others with problems similar to mine, receiving intermittent email delivery.
All I had to do was uninstall Avast and install Panda. Now I can finally enjoy Simple Mail. TechnalXS, you might want to include that warning in your install readmes, so others won't have to pull their hair out trying to fix this.
