Connection Failed

Hello, and apologies if it's me, but...
Yesterday, Simple Mail worked and I really liked it. But all day so far, I just get 'Connection Failed.' My email still works with Thunderbird. Both have the same settings. It seems like the Simple Mail motor has died, but I don't see anyone else yelping, so...

Submitted by jefboyardee on Tue, 09/24/2013 - 13:24Hello and thanks for the reply. I just made Firefox an exception in the Windows 7 firewall, rebooted the PC... nothing changed. I've also tried removing/reentering my Simple Mail accounts, uninstalling/reinstalling Simple Mail.
Just for the record, every other email client I've tried works, but I prefer to use Simple Mail. I'm pretty sure it's me doing something wrong, but I sure haven't discovered what that is. Also, I didn't need to make Thunderbird a firewall exception for it to work.

As I had said, Simple Mail worked two days ago. That evening, I went on a memory conservation crusade and disabled a bunch of services, including Microsoft .NET. The next morning, I noticed the trouble started and continued into today. But I just had to re-enable .NET for a completely different product and Simple Mail suddenly came back to life.
So I had to presume that enabling .NET fixed this, but even that's apparently wrong. Need your help...

It's normal, Thunderbird is know to be a mailer software so every firewall allow it to use mail ports (25,110,993, etc), but not Firefox which is know as a browser so only "internet ports" are allowed by default (80, 8080, 443, etc)

May be an antivirus acting like a firewall ?
"disabled a bunch of services"
Which ones ? anyway if you are able to navigate and if Thunderbird still works i don't think that windows services are involved ... but who knows ...
just to be sure :
imap.gmail.com , 993 with SSL/TLS
smtp.googlemail.com 465 with SSL/TLS

That's what I thought too, but after trying it over and over, it works everywhere but here. I give up. Thanks for helping.
